Our Story

Progressive Volunteers (PV) is a community-based organization founded in May 2007 by a group of five college graduates who saw the need to cultivate the spirit volunteerism amongst young people and also meet the critical needs of less privileged in the community through community projects. Most of its work is focused in the Ruaraka area- a deprived constituency in north east of Nairobi, Kenya.

When Jeremiah Mzee, together with five other young graduates, founded Progressive Volunteers, it was one of the first community-run and youth-led volunteer organization to offer volunteer services to youth so that they could become responsible members of the community.

The organization has since grown from six members to over 165 local and national volunteers, seventeen international volunteers and over 150 online volunteers, promoting the mission and agenda of the organization. Since 2007, Progressive Volunteers has also been working with Volunteer Involving Organizations Network (VIO-Kenya) to champion volunteerism nationally in Kenya.

Some of the highlights over PV’s history include:
  • Successfully piloted a micro-credit project which benefited 15 youth;
  • Supported four non-formal schools; Emmaus Education Centre, Precious Kids Academy, Lucy Education Centre and Glorious Friends High School in Ruaraka with 352 text books
  • Established a community library with over 2000 books
  • Planted 107 trees along Nairobi river, riverside area,
  • Trained 32 Ruaraka Community Health Workers (CHWs) on community first aid.
  • Hosted International Volunteer Day celebrations in 2010 at Mathare North Health Centre and in 2012 in Korogocho.Slums.

We are committed to building on these accomplishments to improve the quality of life of people in the greater Ruaraka area.
